affect every Bhutanese. Find ways in which you can get involved in the work of parliament and on issues that
matter to you.
Have Your Say
Have your say about a proposed new law (bill) that Parliament is considering.
Your MP can raise the issue on your behalf. You can also share your views and experiences to help inform
debates led by Parliament members. Both houses post links seeking feedback on bills.
Become an MP
One of the best ways to get involved in Parliament is to become a member of Parliament by standing in elections. Bhutanese citizens who wish to contest elections and become a member of parliament must meet certain conditions
- Be a registered voter of the constituency they are contesting from
- Be between 25 - 65 years old at the time of filing nominations
- Hold a formal Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution
- Should not have received any money or assistance from foreign sources
- Should not belong to a political party if contesting for the Council
A citizen’s candidacy can be disqualified if he or she is:
- Married to a person who is not a citizen of Bhutan
- Has been terminated from public service
- Has been convicted for any criminal offence and sentenced to prison
- Has not cleared taxes and dues to the government
- Holds an office of profit in government, public companies or corporations.

not filed accounts of election expenses
